Programs + Author Visits

We absolutely love bringing our food knowledge, baking & cooking skills and all around sister-fun into schools, libraries and community centres! We’ve designed 3 food-centric programs made to inspire, educate, and encourage kids to think about and PLAY with their food!

RED, YELLOW, BAKE!

Exploring Colour in Food

Through a variety of hands-on and experiential learning, we look at the ways colour plays an important role in the foods we eat; both nutritionally and mentally. Why does the colour yellow make us think that we are about to taste lemon? Does a brighter shade of pink mean it’s sweeter? All these colour questions will be unpacked and tested!

Now it’s time to make our very own colours! Each student then will have the opportunity to develop their own shade of icing and then ice and decorate a pre-baked sugar cookie or cupcake. New colours will be made, sprinkles will fly, fingers will definitely be licked!

At the end of the program the students will be given some ice-by-colour colouring sheets as well as copies of the recipes explored in class.

SENSORY BLAST-OFF

An Exploration in Taste

This program is designed for educators and curious kids who want to learn more about how the senses work when it comes to eating food.

In this fun, hands-on program, we dive into discovering all about our amazing tongue and the five different flavours it can detect. Through a series of blind taste and smell tests, students will start to recognize how these elements show up in the food they love (and hate) to eat. And ultimately, we’ll see that when these tastes work together, they can create a balanced and delicious bite!

Then we put our findings to work and decorate a pre-baked dessert adding the flavour elements of our choice. This program is guaranteed to produce some extraordinary salty-sweet flavour creations!

At the end of the program the students will be given some ice-by-colour colouring sheets as well as copies of the recipes explored in class.

MY BAKING BURPED!

The Science of Baking

Why is bread fluffy? Why do some cookies and cakes rise up tall and others go flat? Why are eggs so smelly?

In this fun science-forward program we explore how certain ingredients in baking and cooking react the way they do to produce delicious or disastrous results! We will conduct some hands-on experiments that put a spotlight on ingredients like baking soda, yeast, yogurt and eggs.

We will also touch on the importance of measuring in baking and will learn a fun new tool to help us measure up!

Now it's time to put this knowledge to work! The students will have an opportunity to make an easy “reactive” sweet treat!

At the end of the program the students will be given some ice-by-colour colouring sheets as well as copies of the recipes explored in class.

All 3 programs will include a reading from our kids cookbook Baking Wonderland and will begin with an “Icing” Breaker Game that introduces basic kitchen safety and equipment!
